The ASEAN-Japan Workshop on Compound Geohazards under the ASEAN Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Platform for Disaster and Climate Resilience, Intervation Session Series, was successfully implemented on 30–31 March 2026 in Tsukuba, Japan. Hosted by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), Japan, in partnership with COSTI Philippines, the programme gathered 55 delegates from 11 ASEAN Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat, and Japan.
This two-day workshop directly supports a key action outlined in the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026–2035, which is leveraging STI in advancing disaster risk mitigation through strategic partnership. Participants also visited NIED’s simulation facilities—among the world’s largest and most advanced—demonstrating cutting-edge capabilities with strong potential impact for disaster preparedness across ASEAN. A key outcome was the proposal for a Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for ASEAN, powered by advanced technology and seamless interoperability of existing systems to strengthen regional resilience.
